Ideas in Action: Students Gather for Ethics Academy and AI Hackathon
During the week of June 9, the library will be a hub of student innovation and discussion as it hosts two dynamic summer programs: the Ethics and Philosophy Summer Academy (EPSA) and the AI & Mental Health Hackathon. Students in EPSA will engage in philosophical discussions and prepare to lead Ethics Bowl teams in their schools, while participants in the Hackathon will collaborate to design AI-driven solutions for mental health challenges. Both programs promise a week of intellectual exploration, teamwork, and creativity within the library’s walls.
Ethics and Philosophy Summer Academy
High school students participating in the Ethics and Philosophy Summer Academy (EPSA) will meet in Library rooms 100A and 535, and occasionally in open areas throughout the library. This residential camp offers students the opportunity to explore complex ethical questions, discuss current societal issues, and sharpen their critical thinking skills.
A major component of the week includes training students to start Ethics Bowl teams at their high schools, encouraging respectful debate and thoughtful dialogue. Led by Dr. Jana McAuliffe, the program runs daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
AI & Mental Health Hackathon
Also during the week, the library will serve as the afternoon location for the AI & Mental Health Hackathon, a free summer program sponsored by Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield. This intensive experience will bring together around 40 students working with staff leaders and expert mentors in artificial intelligence, software development, mental health, and entrepreneurship.
From noon to 4:30 p.m. each day, participants will work in interdisciplinary teams to develop AI-based solutions to mental health challenges. Activities will take place on the first floor with the use of study rooms and open collaboration spaces. Their week will culminate in a pitch competition on Friday at 3:00 pm in the EIT Auditorium where they can showcase their innovative ideas.
What to Expect
Visitors to the library can expect an energetic atmosphere filled with student activity and teamwork. We’re excited to be part of these young learners’ journeys and invite patrons to join us in offering a warm welcome as they use our space to collaborate, explore, and create.
Please plan your visit accordingly, especially if you rely on specific quiet zones or study rooms. While these events will bring some additional activity, the library remains open to all patrons throughout the week.
